I may have unsubscribed from your email list today. And I want to tell you why.
I want you to know that it's likely not you; it's me.
You see, I've been getting a lot of offers lately, and I guess they've just been building up. Every morning I check my email and I see so many notices. So many newsletters. So many opportunities. I lose track of who's who, and what's what. It's overwhelming.
It was different just a few years ago. There weren't so many people out there competing for my attention. Back then I might have looked forward to the rogue email in my inbox as a welcomed offer.
But things are different now...
Maybe I met you online a while ago, and I followed you only to later learn that we had too little in common.
Maybe you offered a video series or an e-book that I was interested in at the time, and maybe now my interests have changed.
Fickle, I know. But people do change, and that can be ok, too.
But maybe you were a bit too forward. Maybe you sent too many updates. Maybe you asked for too much, too often, or too soon.
It's not that I don't like lists. I do. But with the overabundance of offers, if there's not an immediate value, I have to cut the subscription cord.
I don't want you think you're not valuable. You are. There is the right person - the right reader, the ideal customer - who's out there for you. And with the clutter gone, maybe you can take the steps to find your people.
You don't need the whole world to be on your list. Just the right people for the unique things you have to offer. It's not the size of the list that matters; it's the quality.
I have my own list, too.
It may be smaller than some, but it's valuable to me.
I only want people on my list who want to be on my list. I only want people who value my work and all the stuff I bring to the table.
The right people are out there for us. And now we are free to go find them.
