In June I saw David Sandoval speak at the Pure Living Expo - twice.
The following is a repost of that original blog:
David Sandoval, CEO of Organic by Nature and owner of Purium was definitely one who knocked my socks off.
Sometimes I kind of feel like the Ponce de’Leon of the organic world, tirelessly exploring and searching for the right antioxidant concoction to stop the hands of time.
There are three products that I'm smitten with:
1) Coconut oil. While I go through a jar of organic cold pressed each month, this one is cold packed, so it’s never, ever heated. No one else talks about cold packing their coconut oil, so now I wonder if I’ve been short changing myself and missing out on micronutrients, like immune building monolaurin.
2) Aloe vera. I already take aloe vera juice, but I feel like I’ve been playing roulette with trying to find the right product line. Besides aloe vera’s antiviral properties, it’s really good for the skin. (Did you hear that Senior De’Leon?)
3) Tart cherry juice. Apparently, this stops aging. I'm suddenly craving tart cherries even though I've never eaten them before.
Besides the product, I was enthralled with Sandoval’s energy, enthusiasm, intelligence, and standards.
Voting with your Wallet: Damned it you Do...
As an eco-consumer, there is no greater frustration then when trying to vote with your wallet and you realize that you are damned if you do but damned if you... do. What I mean is, you want a good, healthy product, but trying to make healthful decisions within America – a nutritional wasteland - is our first hurdle to cross. Then, as a conscious consumer, you want to make sure that Orangutans weren’t massacred in the process of extracting your beloved health product.
Then, you want to consider your eco footprint. Where did this come from? What is the real cost of delivering this product to you? How much was wasted in the process? And after you’ve done all that work, after you’ve hunted for the right product and the right company, the real kicker? Your eco health product is wrapped in plastic wrap. That plastic wrap cannot be recycled, (and even if it could, recycling it would take more resources than not recycling it) and inevitably it collectively contributes to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, or it’s successor.
Plastic is everywhere. Even the most astute of us granola eaters cannot avoid it completely.
So here’s Sandoval’s thing. He’s going to start packaging his product with... not plastic. It will be bamboo, hemp, and wood pulp – and it will be compostable.
To hear the owner of a big company say that reducing waste is a part of his agenda is like, holy guacamole. Finally an image of a CEO I don’t have to draw a mustache and devil ears on.
Look, my take on companies is that they want to drive down their costs but increase prices for consumers, and they will wipe out the entire rainforest and kill off language families to buy an extra yaught, or whatever it is that drives corporate greed.
So for those of us trying to be conscious consumers, it is so frustrating and so tiring to have to think and worry and at the end of all that thinking, you're left with some bad choice or another. But having a “conscious company” leading the way gives me some hope that others will follow. I mean if Wal-Mart can add an organic produce section, then anything can happen, right?
I have hope for the future.
Sandoval says, he has “very high standards for (his) food, very high standards for (his) body, very high standards for the future of our planet.”
Me, too David. Me, too…
