Back in June I met David Sandoval, founder of Purium, at the Pure Living Expo in Sedona, Az.
I was smitten with this man and his energy - and I was especially impressed by his quality product and vision.
In October I finally did the 10 Challenge. Here's what I learned...
It's a detox, so you feel worse before you feel better.
For the first few days I felt lethargic and just plain crappy. I've detoxed before, and I know this is the case. I upped my water intake and kept on trucking.
I felt full the whole time.
Going into it, I read the protocols and found that three green shakes and three snacks (an apple, half an avocado, and some berries) were all you got per day. I thought I would starve to death, but this was not the case.
About three days into it, I could only do two shakes and two snacks. I was too full.
I'm a coffee drinker. About four cups a day on average. I got it down to one cup a day (no creamer, no sugar). That's as good as I can do. THAT'S AS GOOD AS I CAN DO.
I didn't make it the whole way.
Two days into it I had an organic quinoa salad at Sharky's. I reasoned that it was like a really, really big snack (mostly spinach and avocado). Day 9, I quit entirely. It was my friend's birthday: there was cake and wine. That's how it was.
I didn't lose any weight.
And I didn't expect to. I think the most beneficial aspect of the Purium plan is that it can really help people who are mainstream eaters adopt a more conscious eating routine.
But me? I have been shopping at organic farms for the past severals years. Farmers markets have been for when I feel lazy. Traders Joes? I consider that junk food. I've been canning my own organic, straight-from-the-farm pasta sauce and sugar free fruit butters and blending my own organic almond milk. I buy the $21 raw almond butter at Wholefoods.
I lost 30 pounds in six months by going local, vegetarian paleo - and alcohol free. And I gained ten pounds back by bringing wine, martinis, and bread (why???) into my life again.
What I can take from this...
I'm keeping the amino acids. Before embarking on the challenge, I found out I was deficient in amino acids. I'm a vegetarian and the beans are only going so far, apparently.
I'm keeping thetart cherry juice.
This stuff tastes amazing... I drink it right before bed and it knocks me out.... It's full of anti-oxidants, so it will keep me young... I would marry it if it were single.
I'm keeping the green drinks.
They are ridiculously filling, they don't have any weird ingredients in them, and they are the easiest thing in the world to make. Fill the BPA-free jug with the green powder, add water, and shake it on the go. I am busy and get hungry in weird places. This is coming in handy...
Final Appraisal: So is it worth it?
In my opinion, yes. I didn't need to loose 5-20 pounds to benefit from the detox. But especially for most Americans on a standard American diet, I can see this helping in detox, nutrients, portion awareness,breaking addictions to processed food, and weight loss.
