Readers, please forgive me. It’s been five months since my last blog.
I’ve been tirelessly working on a novel, a kick ass spiritual comedy about two valley girls who... Well, you’ll get to read all about it soon enough!
This past weekend, though, I wasn’t writing – I was conferencing in Maui at the Hayhouse writer’s conference, Writing from your Soul.
The speaker who did the most talking was Dr. Wayne Dyer - Wayne’s probably the best looking seventy year old man that’s walked this planet, next to Jack Lalanne – and boy does he like to talk. His voice has a way of lulling you into a blissful state. He also has a knack for encouraging you to quit your job to follow your heart’s desire: “Your soul says, ‘You’ve got to do this!’” Yes, it does, Wayne. Yes, it does!
In between Wayne’s hypnotic motivational speeches, angel expert Doreen Virtue would float in on a warm Maui breeze to sign books and take pictures with adoring fans, much like Snow White or Tinkerbelle makes her timed appearances at Disneyland.
Within the spiritual and New Age community Doreen Virtue is like our Fairy Godmother, and she is as unconditionally loved by her worldwide fan base as all the Disney princesses combined are loved by theirs.
And I got to meet her. I got to meet Doreen Virtue. As I was returning back from lunch, I noted a small, lively crowd congregating in a circle in front of the conference room. I could hear excited murmurs and saw the flashes from iPhone cameras illuminating Doreen who was dressed like a woodland fairy in an earthy tie-dyed green wrap dress with sleeves that flared out at the wrist like a hippy princess.
So there we were. Between the bathroom and the ballroom I was able to shake Doreen’s hand and thank her for inspiring me to write my book. It actually was Doreen’s Weekly Angel Card Reading on YouTube that dropped a very fertile seed of inspiration – which quickly germinated into a creative rainforest - for the book that I’m writing. That Youtube video created a catalystic moment that was so fantastical, magical, and serendipitous that it inspired me to write a novel. And that novel has already inspired the outlines for its two sequels (which I’m already adapting into screen plays, thank you very much).
So there I was, my hand was shaking Doreen’s hand (the same blessed hand that she uses to flip angle divination cards with) and I said, “Thank you, Doreen. Thank you for inspiring me to write my book, Brooke and Rosie Save the World.” And as I went into a little more detail, I saw a look on Doreen’s face that I’ve seen a hundred times over. When I make such bold, declarative statements, as I am apt to do, sometimes people can’t figure out if I’m a crazy lady or a genius in the making.
I prefer to go with the latter, but perhaps only time – and a series of published novels - will tell!
I’m glad I got to meet Doreen. I’m glad I had the courage to tell her about my book and thank her for her inspirational work. You only live once, or eh-hem, perhaps I’d rather hedge my bets on stating that you only live this lifetime once.
“Your soul says, ‘you’ve got to do this!’ Have the courage to listen!”
I do have the courage to listen to my soul and to let my soul have the biggest say in my life’s journey.
But this is easier said than done, I must point out. Especially if your soul is bold and brazen and wants to do bold, brazen, and crazy things with your life.
What does my soul say?
My soul says something to the effect of, “Geronimo!” So I’m bolstering myself with the courage to take – not just a step – but a flying leap into the unknown, hoping to God that my soul knows what in the hell she’s doing.
